A group of Xuhui District parents are seeking the media's help following the disappearance of a teacher they lent 132,000 yuan (US$15,904).
The 52-year-old teacher at a vocational school in Xuhui, Chen Zhenyun, borrowed the money from parents of at least four of her students, according to a local newspaper, News Times.
Chen Meifeng, a mother of one of the students, said the teacher called her last April asking to borrow 50,000 yuan for business purposes.
"My son was then in Chen's class. Since he often was in trouble, I would feel awful if I refused the teacher's request to borrow money. I was hoping to build a good relationship with her," said the mother.
"Now she has just disappeared. I don't know what I can do. I trusted the teacher so much that I even sold my stocks to collect the money. We are not wealthy."
Chen said all of her savings had been given to the teacher and the family was now having difficulties in paying her husband's medical bills for a kidney ailment.
Similar things happened to other parents of children studying in Chen's class.
According to the victims, the teacher wrote an IOU and promised to return the money on time.
When they asked her about repaying the debt she always hedged.
School authorities claimed they have only recently learned of the issue and had sent officials to Chen's residence to investigate.
Only the woman's father-in-law was living in the apartment. He claimed he had no idea of her whereabouts.
The authorities said they supported the victims' actions to get back their money through legal action.
However, a local lawyer said it would not be easy.
"They can file a lawsuit against the teacher, but they had better find the teacher first. Even if the court ruled in their favor, the absence of the defendant will make it difficult to fulfill the ruling," said Liu Chunquan, attorney from Shanghai H&Y Law Firm.
"The most important issue now is to gather the evidence and information on the debtor's property, which can help the court to execute the decision," he added.
Chen was originally scheduled to retire in February 2001 but because of her good performance, the school renewed the contract until last July, according to officials of her school.
